Quality vs. Quantity: The Internet Speed Misnomer

Many people think they need the highest Internet speeds in the world to perform their daily tasks. This is far from the truth, as quality in anything beats quantity. Let’s take good old-fashioned chocolate, for example. If you have really good chocolate, you know that one or two bites of perfectly made chocolate will have a greater effect than a half-pound of poorly made chocolate. The comparison can be made with almost anything, including bargain basement toilet paper.

The same rule holds true for Internet connectivity. For example, while a colleague was briefly living in Brazil a few years ago, their main internet went out one night due to a storm. They had to use a personal phone hotspot to join a video call. After checking the speeds and seeing only five Mbps down and one Mbps up, they assumed it would be a disaster. However, they spent an hour on the call and never missed a beat; there were no outages, frozen screens, or any blurriness.

What many people don’t realize is that a solid 25 Mbps down and five Mbps up is really all that is required. People who think one Gbps speeds are required are often not technical people. A one Gbps connection, with varying real speeds and variable latency, is nowhere near as good as a rock-solid 100 Mbps connection. And a 100 Mbps connection is a lot cheaper in most cases than a one Gbps connection.

Wifinium has unique experience in managing wireless Internet for high-density and high-demand environments like student housing complexes. Some of these complexes housed 400 students, each with five to 10 devices. You might be shocked to learn that the total aggregate Internet usage rarely peaked above one Gbps. That is an amazing and shocking fact to most people. So, how can one person or even a few people in the same household truly need a one Gbps connection?

The focus on raw speed often ignores the critical factor of network health, which is the consistency and responsiveness of the connection. This is why a five Mbps link with low jitter and stable latency can outperform a bursty one Gbps connection that drops packets or experiences wide variations in response time. The speed number (Mbps or Gbps) is merely the maximum throughput; it says nothing about the reliability of that bandwidth or how gracefully the network handles simultaneous users. In our demanding digital world, packet loss and high latency are the true connection killers, turning a streaming video into a stuttering mess or making a video call unusable, regardless of the advertised speed.

With wireless technology connectivity speeds now reaching close to 10 Gbps, it is tempting to use the largest wireless channel size available, thinking that is the best. As discussed above, that is classic quantity thinking. The reality is that in the wireless world we think differently, especially when there are multiple wireless devices in the same vicinity. The premise of wireless technology is to use the smallest channel size possible to achieve the desired outcome. Many people like to go to the beach and claim their own small section to enjoy the sun, but even when sharing the beach with thousands of others, everyone is able to enjoy the surf and the sun. The same applies to wireless technology: always think of your neighbor. Hogging valuable shared spectrum on a wireless device is not only detrimental to your neighbor, it is detrimental to yourself.

Wifinium Services: Prioritizing Quality

At Wifinium, we embody this philosophy of quality over raw speed in every solution we design. Our experience managing high-density environments like student housing has proven that consistent, low-latency and well-managed bandwidth is far superior to simply chasing the largest speed number. We don’t just sell you the biggest pipe; we engineer a smart, efficient system that ensures your critical applications (including video conferencing, streaming videos, gaming and large file transfers) work flawlessly even during peak usage. Our focus is on providing a rock-solid connection that eliminates the frustrating lag, dropped packets, and freezing that plague many poor-quality networks touting high speeds.

Wifinium’s approach extends to optimizing both wired and wireless infrastructure. We leverage advanced network monitoring and channel planning to minimize interference and guarantee fair access to all users, echoing the “think of your neighbor” principle. Whether you are managing MDUs (Multi-Dwelling Units), offices, transportation hubs, or Large Public Venues (LPVs), Wifinium provides the expertise to deliver a connection that is right-sized, robust, and cost-effective.
